OUR STANDARD

Raising the Standard: Why Professionalism in Real Estate Still Matters

For much of my career, my work has taken place in two parallel arenas: serving clients at the local level, and advocating for the real estate profession at the state and national level. Over time, I’ve come to believe these roles are not separate—they are inseparable.

At its best, real estate is not a sales business. It is an advisory profession built on judgment, responsibility, and trust. The decisions our clients make—about homes, land, and legacy—carry long-term consequences that extend far beyond a single transaction. When those decisions are guided well, families are protected, communities are strengthened, and confidence in our profession grows. When they are not, the impact can linger for years.

Advocacy work has reinforced this belief. Whether addressing consumer protection, professional standards, risk management, or the long-term health of our industry, the same theme emerges again and again: trust is the foundation of a functioning real estate market. And trust is not created by marketing, speed, or volume. It is earned through preparation, accountability, and principled decision-making.

That belief is what led to the formation—and intentional shaping—of Susan Cole Realty Group.

From the beginning, SCRG was built around a simple but ambitious mission: to raise the standard of real estate representation. Not to grow the fastest. Not to chase volume. But to demonstrate, in practice, what real estate looks like when it is treated as a profession with responsibility.

This mission mirrors the work of advocacy. At the policy level, we talk about professionalism, ethics, and consumer confidence. At the brokerage level, we have the opportunity—and the obligation—to live those principles daily. Advocacy sets the direction. Practice gives it credibility.

Our vision at SCRG is deliberately audacious: to make trusted, stewardship-driven real estate the norm, not the exception. That vision is not about market dominance. It is about influence. It recognizes that cultural change in any profession happens gradually—one decision, one transaction, one standard upheld at a time.

This approach has required discipline. It means being selective about who we represent and who we recruit. It means investing heavily in systems, training, and accountability. It means valuing judgment over urgency and preparation over performance metrics. And it means being willing to slow down when slowing down is in the client’s best interest.

But the result has been worth it. Clients experience clarity instead of pressure. Agents build careers rooted in pride and longevity rather than burnout. And the work itself becomes sustainable—ethically, professionally, and personally.

At the advocacy table, conversations often focus on how to protect the public and strengthen confidence in real estate. At the brokerage table, those same goals are achieved through daily behavior. The two reinforce each other.

If we want the public to trust our profession, we must be willing to hold ourselves to standards that are sometimes higher than what is required—and certainly higher than what is convenient. Leadership, in any form, is not about titles or positions. It is about consistency between what we say and what we do.

Raising the standard is not a slogan. It is a responsibility.

And it is one we should be willing to carry—together.
